Hi Golden Folks!
I've had enough requests about teaching the 24K's Tricks that I decided to post it to the list. It'll sure save me alot of editing time!
O.K. class let's get ready for our first lesson. Oh no, we won't be needing those shock collars. Let's put them under our desks now and we'll all go over to the container and get a few snacks for our little friends. (Have you had enough yet!?) Up against the wall you're busted!
Stand next to a wall with your right profile facing it. With a snack in your right hand reach up high enough to the wall that the pup can't quite reach it. Pat the wall with your hand a few times and say "up against the wall you're busted"! ( Use a little excitement in your voice, later you can sound commanding.) Sometimes they will jump up to try and get it.....Nooooo. When the pup stretches out and puts it's cute little puppy paws on the wall, swivel around behind the pup kind of like straddling it and just sort of help support it there for a few seconds. Quick with the snack and lots of praise!
I teach my dogs this too: "Milo, it's Kodiaks turn!" so he'll let Kodiak retrieve too! How did I do that??? Start with: "Milo, sit! Hold! It's Kodiak's turn!" After lots of practice, when I say it's Kodiak's turn, he translates that to sit and hold!
You can teach them to hold in the against the wall position. From that position then "Hold! Don't move you criminal!" Translates to; "Don't move you criminal!" O.K. so you get it! It's not what you say now, it's what you said and did before to get the translation thing happening. Cool, Huh!!
When you train, use hand signals at the same time and then the pup will learn both! O.K. what's next?
Oh Yeah, It's the same thing with the bang command! I bet you can do it by yourself now that you've got the idea.
Playing Tricks on the 24K-Dogs too!
Barb and "all" her 24K-DOGS (You mean other GR's have to get lots of baths and brushed constantly? They don't get to play in the woods all day and swim in the pond!)
contributed by Rikki Kirzner Teach your dog "find it". Take a toy or a treat he really likes. Show it to him. Go into the next room and place it in some really obvious spot. Bring him in the room and tell him "find it!" Make a big fuss when he does. Gradually hide the object where it is more difficult to fnd, and add more rooms. Great rainy-day game!
Great game!! I taught Hunter this about 6 weeks ago. HE LOVES IT AND WANTS TO PLAY FOR HOURS!!
We used to just play fetch and rough-house with stuffed toys in the evening (after dinner and his run on the beach), but I could tell Hunter was getting bored with the minor variations of the same game every night. So I started this game by leaving him on a sit stay in one room and hiding his favorite toy in the next room. Then telling him to "find it". I made a fuss and he got so excited he brought the toy back and did a perfect sit with a silly grin on his face.
At first I made it easy by putting the toy on the floor in another room (out of his sight). I have gradually made the game harder and harder. Hiding it under things, and behind things anywhere in the house. He uses his nose and has very little trouble finding the toy.
Currently we are up to 2 toys, and he knows he has to get the second one before he gets his "HOORAY FOR HUNTER" praise. He loves this game and will play it for as long as I want to keep hiding toys.
